Men's Soccer Loses 2-1 at Briar Cliff
Sioux City, IA – The Hastings College men's soccer team got off to a fast start but Briar Cliff countered with two first half goals to defeat the Broncos 2-1 on Wednesday afternoon.
Hastings got things going when Macguire Weaver was able to get a cross through the box to Joe Vokins as he got just enough of a touch on the ball for it to cross the goal line before being cleared to give the Broncos the early 1-0 lead in the 13th minute.
But it didn't take long for the Chargers to counter with a header goal by Daniel Ehlin for the equalizer in the 17th minute. BCU struck again in the 25th minute on a long through ball to Andrew Buchanan as he chipped his shot over Pablo Arce-Salinas into the goal for the 2-1 lead.
Hastings was unable to manage another shot for the rest of the first half and trailed 2-1 at the break.
The Broncos looked to equalize themselves when Sandro Rubio lined up for a free kick in the 70th minute. Rubio took the free kick from just outside the 18 beating the keeper but the ball hit off the crossbar as Hastings still trailed 2-1.
Down the stretch Hastings was able to pick up three corner kicks but could not find the touch finishing the final 20 minutes without another shot.
Briar Cliff out shot the Broncos 13-to-6 including 9-to-2 in shots on goal. Arce-Salinas finished the game with seven saves.
Hastings falls to 4-5-1 (3-1) on the year and will be back in action Saturday Sept. 30 as Morningside comes to town with kickoff set for 5:30 pm out on Lloyd Wilson Field.
