Men's Soccer Takes Down Tigers 2-1
(Hastings, NE) – Playing in just their second home conference game of the season, the Hastings Broncos defeated Dakota Wesleyan 2-1 on Saturday.
It was freshman Tim Berger again that scored the goal for the Broncos, his fourth goal in the last three games, in the 14th minute. Freshman Moises Trochez had a great opportunity for a goal going one-on-one with the Tiger goalkeeper in the 44th minute, but his shot sailed over the goal.
Berger and sophomore Juan Rubio both took two shots in the first half as the Broncos led 1-0 at halftime. As a team, Hastings took seven shots to Dakota Wesleyan's six and the Broncos took the only two shots on goal in the period.
Hastings opened the second half with a great attack as they had a couple of shots almost find the back of the net. Rubio had his shot blocked and bounced off the crossbar, then Trochez had his shot saved by the Tiger goalkeeper.
Trochez scored a goal in the 65th minute off of a beautiful setup from sophomore Wade McWhorter. McWhorter weaved between Tiger defenders and led Trochez perfectly, who knocked it past the goalkeeper to take a 2-0 lead.
Dakota Wesleyan scored their only goal of the match in the 79th minute, coming on an unassisted shot to make it a 2-1 final. For the match, Hastings outshot the Tigers 24-11 and 9-2 on shots on goal. Rubio led the teams in shots with four, followed by Berger with three. Sophomore Ethan Watkins had one save for the Broncos in the 2-1 win.
