Broncos Fall 3-2 to Warriors at Home
(Hastings, NE) - The Hastings Broncos looked to continue their two-game win streak against the Midland Warriors and gain control in the conference title race, but they ultimately lost 3-2 on Wednesday.
Freshman Tim Berger made an incredible effort to score the opening goal in the 4th minute, as he took a pass from fellow freshman Lorenz Stickel and with his back to the goal, performed a highlight-real bicycle kick that brought the Bronco crowd to its feet with a big roar.
Midland responded, however, with goals in the 18th and 34th minute to take a 2-1 halftime lead. The Warriors outshot the Broncos 7-5 in the first half and 3-2 on shots on goal. Junior Juan Arteaga-Lopez led the Broncos with two shot attempts in the first half.
The Warriors tacked on a third unanswered goal in the 58th minute to go up 3-1 early in the second half. Hastings was able to get a late goal from Berger on a pass from sophomore Juan Rubio in the 88th minute, but the Midland defense stood tall in the last 30 seconds when Berger had a header saved and sophomore Jalen Jensen had his shot blocked to hold onto the 3-2 win.
Hastings took 22 shots to Midland's shots in the match and held a 9-7 advantage on shots on goal. Berger led the team in shots with six, including four shots on goal. Senior Lewis Albert took three shots and Arteaga-Lopez took two shots. Senior goalkeeper Pablo Arce-Salinas had four saves in the game for the Broncos.
Up next, Hastings will travel to Sioux Center, IA to play Dordt at 4:15pm on Saturday, Oct. 19.
