Women's Basketball Drops Away Game to Dordt
(Sioux Center, IA) – The undefeated #1-ranked Dordt Defenders raced out to a 11-0 lead to begin the game and never looked back, winning the game convincingly, 82-54.
Dordt held the Broncos without a basket until the 4:09 mark of the first quarter when senior Kiernan Paulk made a couple of free throws to make it 11-2. Dordt immediately responded with a basket and would only allow a free throw by sophomore Bailey Kissinger the rest of the quarter, as they led 18-3 after the first ten minutes.
Junior Mariyah Avila opened the second quarter with a three, the first field goal of the game for Hastings. The Defenders had another run in them to halt the threat of a run, scoring five straight points in the next minute-and-a-half of action. Trailing 23-6, junior Macy Bryant knocked down a three-pointer with 6:31 to go in the half. Freshman Ann Bose hit a jumper to get the Broncos into double digits, trailing 25-11 with five minutes left.
Dordt would close the half on a 11-6 run, including a jumper right before halftime to maintain the momentum with a 36-17 lead. The Defenders showed why they hold the top ranking, holding a Hastings team that recently won at #14 Concordia on Wednesday, to 19 percent shooting overall and 18 percent from three, in addition to forcing 13 first half turnovers.
To start the second half, Dordt scored the first five points. Hastings matched those baskets with a three by Bryant and a layup from Avila. Dordt continued to grow their lead later in the quarter, taking a 50-24 lead with 4:39 left in the third. Kissinger was able to score a couple of times inside and sophomore Rachel Goodon stepped to the line and drilled a couple of free throws, but the Defenders still held a 59-34 lead going to the fourth.
The fourth quarter was the best scoring quarter for Hastings with 20 points. Avila scored immediately after a Dordt bucket and Bose got another to go inside. Yates later hit four free throws in the quarter and freshman Adyson Mlnarik drained a couple of threes late to make the final score 82-54.
For the game, Hastings was held to 30 percent shooting from the field and 22 percent from behind the arc. The Broncos battled hard on the boards, only losing the rebounding battle by five, but were forced into 23 turnovers. Mlnarik was the leading scorer for Hastings with nine points, followed by eight points from Bose. Kissinger was the leading rebounder with seven boards, along with her five points.
Up next, the Broncos will head to Hawaii to participate in the Honolulu Classic. Their first game will take place at 3pm CST against Benedictine College on Thursday, Dec. 19.
