Women's Basketball Cruises Past Lancers, 82-61

(Hastings, NE) – The women's basketball team outscored the Mount Marty Lancers in each of the four quarters, locking up the 82-61 win on Wednesday evening.

Sophomore McKenna Yates made two threes to start the scoring and sophomore Josilyn Miller came off the bench and scored to go up 8-0 before Mount Marty scored. Leading 10-6, sophomore Adyson Mlnarik drained a three and got a steal shortly after that resulted in an and-one from junior Bailey Kissinger. Sophomore Ann Bose capped the quarter off with a buzzer-beating triple to put Hastings up 21-13.

Similar to the first quarter, Yates hit from downtown to start the second. Sophomore Stella Heapy knocked down a three on their next offensive trip and after a Lancer turnover, Yates found senior Mariyah Avila for two to go up 29-13 with 8:40 left in the half. Mount Marty got back within 11 a couple minutes later, but threes by Mlnarik and Avila kept the lead at a comfortable double-digit margin. Leading 40-26 with two minutes left, Hastings outscored Mount Marty 7-5 down the stretch, including a three by Avila right before half to take a 47-31 lead.

Avila picked up where she left off to start the third quarter, drilling a three. Hastings pushed the lead to 22 on a three from Heapy at the 6:33 mark, but Mount Marty fought back, getting back within 14 with 2:42 left in the quarter. Up 57-44, Yates set up sophomore Jentri Marx for a bucket and Yates capitalized on an Avila steal with a three-pointer near the end of the period to put Hastings ahead, 62-44, heading to the fourth.

Avila got the first basket of the fourth and Heapy later put in another triple to take a 69-46 lead. An and-one from Kissinger at the 4:16 mark kept Hastings ahead by 24, then Bose went on a personal 5-0 run after a Lancer basket to make it 79-52 with 3:13 left. Mount Marty would get within 20 in the final minute, but the Broncos came away with the 82-61 win.

Hastings shot 38 percent from the field, holding Mount Marty to 28 percent. The Broncos made 16 threes at a 39 percent clip, one three-pointer shy of tying the school record in a game, and have now made 49 triples in their last three games. They also forced 27 turnovers and turned them into 30 points.

Yates finished with a game-high 16 points, making four threes, along with seven rebounds. Avila had 13 points, four steals, three rebounds, and three assists. Heapy came off the bench to score 12 points all from three-point range and had four assists. Kissinger also reached double-figures with 11 points, six rebounds, and five assists. Senior Macy Bryant led the team in rebounds with nine, including five offensive, along with two points and three steals.

Up next, Hastings will play at Briar Cliff on Saturday, Dec. 13 at 2pm.
