Women's Basketball Blows Out Tigers, 101-78
(Crete, NE) – Looking to build off their conference-opening win four days ago, the women's basketball team knocked down 14 threes on the night and forced 27 turnovers in their 101-78 win at Doane on Wednesday night.
Senior Mariyah Avila drilled two three-pointers in the first two minutes of the game and after Doane trimmed the Bronco lead to two at 7-5, Hastings responded with a 7-0 run. Junior Bailey Kissinger got a steal and layup, then after a three by sophomore Ann Bose, fellow sophomore McKenna Yates splashed in the fourth triple of the quarter at the 5:49 mark to put Hastings ahead 15-5.
Doane inched closer over the course of the next three minutes, getting as close as six with 2:22 left in the first. Sophomore Stella Heapy hit the fifth and final three of the period shortly after, as Hastings led 24-15 after one.
The second quarter started even for both teams in the first two minutes, with the Tigers trailing 31-22 with 7:43 remaining in the half. Hastings dominated the rest of the period, outscoring them 27-8. Sophomore Josilyn Miller started the run with a three and Heapy drained another from the outside at the midway point of the second quarter to make it 39-24.
At 39-25, Bose hit her second three of the half, and after a steal and score by Yates, Bose's third triple of the half made it 48-25. Senior Macy Bryant and Yates later finished three-point plays the old fashioned way, and Kissinger scored the final Bronco points of the half, as Hastings led 58-30 at the break.
In the opening half, Hastings shot 47 percent from the field, holding Doane to 39%, and made nine three-pointers. The Broncos also forced 15 turnovers, leading to 15 points off of them, and outrebounded the Tigers, 25-17. Bose had a team-high 16 points through 20 minutes.
Yates began the third with a steal defensively and took it back for a layup. After four quick points by Doane, Bose hit again from deep. They went up 31 on two free throws from Miller. Leading 69-44 with 3:26 left in the third, Hastings scored 12 of the last 20 points of the quarter, with Yates contributing five points during that stretch to take a 81-52 lead after three.
In the fourth, Doane scored eight of the first 10 points, making it 83-60 with 7:18 left. Free throws by sophomores Olivia Malousek and Jentri Marx, in addition to a jumper from junior Kaitlyn Johnson pushed the lead back to 29. Hastings continued their great three-point shooting, with sophomore Mikah O'Neill making one and freshman Amirah Pena knocking down two. O'Neill scored inside in the final minute on a three-point play to put Hastings over the century mark, 101-78.
For the game, Hastings forced 27 turnovers and turned them into 31 points. They had a 42-38 rebounding edge and their bench outscored Doane's 47-35, with all 15 players scoring at least two points.
Bose, who had four of the teams' 14 threes ended with 21 points and four rebounds. Yates was the only other Bronco in double-figures with 17 points, along with four assists, three rebounds, and three steals. Marx led the team in rebounding with 11, including seven offensive boards, in addition to six points. Kissinger starred defensively, coming away with six of Hastings' 17 steals, while also contributing four points, four rebounds, and three assists.
