Women's Basketball Starts Season With Blowout Win Over Mayville State
(Hastings, NE) – The women's basketball team, ranked 12th in the NAIA, came out on their opening night and toppled the Mayville State Comets, 89-66. They forced 40 turnovers in the game, including 26 in the first half.
With the score tied at nine-all three minutes in, Hastings started to build a lead. Sophomores Ann Bose and Jentri Marx made free throws and baskets from sophomores Josilyn Miller and Stella Heapy, the Broncos went up 10 at 19-9 with 3:05 left in the opening quarter. Senior Macy Bryant drilled a three to put Hastings ahead, 22-9, at the end of the first quarter, sparked by 16 Comet turnovers.
Hastings continued their momentum in the second quarter, getting scoring contributions from junior Tathis Arredondo, sophomore Adyson Mlnarik, and Bryant to go up 27-12 at the 7:19 mark of the second quarter. They later went up 20 on a bucket from Heapy halfway through the quarter. Mayville State was able to cut into the lead a bit the rest of the half, getting to within 43-27 in the final minute, but a three from Bose at the end of the half put Hastings up 46-27.
Bryant answered a Comet basket with a three to put Hastings up 20 early in the third. Senior Mariyah Avila scored after a defensive stop, then stole it in the backcourt and put another two on the board to go up 24. Junior Bailey Kissinger grew the lead to 27 at 56-29 on an and-one. Hastings continued to add to their lead, with Miller eventually putting them up 31 midway through the third. Miller, Bose, and sophomore McKenna Yates kept up the scoring in the third to go up 80-43 going to the fourth.
Hastings was able to get their reserves some action in the fourth, which led to Mayville State outscoring the Broncos 23-9 in the period, making the final score a bit closer at 89-66. Sophomore Olivia Malousek led the Broncos in scoring in the quarter with three points.
Both teams shot under 40 percent from the field, but the Broncos forced 40 turnovers and scored 37 points off of them. Miller came off the bench and had a game-high 19 points, along with four steals. Kissinger stuffed the stat sheet with 13 points, seven assists, five rebounds, and two steals. Avila and Bose also contributed 11 points and three steals each.
