Women's Basketball Shines in 2nd Half of 72-51 Win at Tabor
(Hillsboro, KS) – Taking on the Tabor Bluejays in their final game before Thanksgiving, the women's basketball team outscored Tabor by 18 in the second half to get the win on Tuesday night, 72-51.
Senior Mariyah Avila began the scoring with a jumper, then after a 4-0 run by the Bluejays, freshman McKenna Yates drilled a three. Baskets by sophomore Josilyn Miller and Yates pushed the lead to 9-4 with 4:38 left in the first, but Tabor managed to keep it close, getting to within two at 14-12 at the end of the quarter.
In the second quarter, Tabor built a three-point lead at the 7:35 mark. The Bluejays would hold the lead until just over halfway into the period when sophomore Stella Heapy drained a three-pointer. Miller gave the Broncos the lead back on a layup, then following a three-pointer from Tabor, sophomore Mikah O'Neill and Yates combined for five points to close the half, putting Hastings up 30-27 at the half.
Hastings came out strong in the second half, outscoring the Bluejays 24-10 in the third. Senior Macy Bryant started things off with a three-pointer on the first possession. After two Tabor free throws, Avila's three pushed the lead to seven. Avila hit another three about a minute later and an and-one from Bose made it a 44-33 lead with 5:36 left in the third. Baskets from sophomore Adyson Mlnarik, Miller, and Bryant later capped an 11-0 run. Bose grew the lead as big as 19 in the third, as Hastings went to the fourth up 17, 54-37.
The Broncos continued to hold their big lead in the fourth with Miller and Mlnarik scoring early on. Yates and Bryant tacked onto the lead with threes to go up 24 with 5:52 left. Their biggest lead of the game was 26 on a layup from Avila, as they ended up with the 72-51 victory.
Tabor forced 10 first half turnovers, but the Broncos improved in the second, only turning it over five times, while forcing 23 Bluejay turnovers. Hastings shot 52 percent from the field for the game, holding the Bluejays to 35 percent, and outrebounding Tabor, 31-29.
Yates finished with 12 points and three assists, while Avila also added 12 points. Bryant contributed 10 points, three rebounds, and three assists. Miller had 10 points and two steals off the bench. Kissinger and Bose each had six rebounds and combined for 10 points, seven steals, and five assists in the win.
Up next, Hastings will resume their GPAC schedule with a road game against Midland on Wednesday, Dec. 3 at 6pm.
