Women's Basketball Dominates Defensively in Win over Bethany
(Lindsborg, KS) – For the second consecutive game, the women's basketball team used their stellar defense to cruise to a win, defeating Bethany 87-57 by forcing 29 turnovers. Hastings has now forced 69 turnovers in their first two games.
The Broncos opened the game with the first five points, coming on a three-pointer by senior Macy Bryant and a jumper from sophomore Ann Bose. Leading 11-7 at the 4:27 mark of the opening quarter, junior Bailey Kissinger converted a three-point play, then after a Swede basket, Bose had an and-one play of her own. Kissinger briefly put the Broncos up 10 before Bethany made a free throw to end the quarter with a 19-10 score.
Hastings scored the first nine points of the second quarter, including five from Bryant, to go up 28-10. Bethany trimmed the lead to 15, then Kissinger came right back with a basket plus the foul. The two teams traded baskets the rest of the quarter, as senior Mariyah Avila ended the half with a layup to put the Broncos up 41-24 at the half.
Bose got the scoring started in the second half on a layup, and after two Swede free throws, she drained two free throws. Sophomore McKenna Yates found the range from behind the arc to push the lead over 20 at 48-26. Later in the quarter, sophomores Adyson Mlnarik and Josilyn Miller knocked down threes, then Bryant scored inside to go up 60-29. Hastings, who outscored Bethany, 27-9 in the third, went to the fourth quarter up 68-33, ending the period with a steal and layup from Bose.
Avila hit a couple of shots early in the fourth, including a triple, to make it 73-35. Yates made an impact by getting to the line multiple times, making three of four free throws, and hit a three to put the Broncos up 80-49 with four minutes left, in what would soon be a 87-57 final.
The Broncos knocked down 11 threes and outrebounded Bethany, 40-37. They forced 29 turnovers and turned those into 30 points. Bose led the team in scoring with 16 points, along with eight rebounds and three steals. Kissinger posted a double-double with 15 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists, and three steals.
Yates added 12 points and three rebounds, and Bryant had 10 points, five rebounds, and two steals. Avila had a team-high five steals to go along with seven points, three rebounds, and three assists.
