Women's Basketball Makes History with 116 Points In Runaway Win

(Hastings, NE) – History was made in Lynn Farrell Arena tonight when senior Whitney Bauer's putback jumper sank through the net in the closing seconds of the 116-52 win over College of Saint Mary, surpassing the previous record of 115 points.

The Flames scored on each of their first three possessions to take a 6-4 lead, then Hastings responded with a 13-0 run. Junior Mariyah Avila started the run with a three, which was followed by a basket from freshman Jentri Marx. Avila and freshman Ann Bose, who was recently named GPAC Offensive Player of the Week, hit back-to-back triples, then Bose concluded the run with a layup.

Saint Mary broke the run with a basket with 3:57 left to make it 17-8. Marx scored a basket shortly after, then converted on a three-point play following a Saint Mary three-pointer, putting the Broncos up 22-11. Freshman Adyson Mlnarik concluded the first quarter scoring with a three to give the Broncos a 25-11 advantage.

Junior Macy Bryant dominated the beginning of the second period, scoring four baskets in the first 1:35 of the quarter, as Hastings scored the first 20 points of the quarter. Sophomore Rachel Goodon, who concluded the huge run with two free throws, scored five more consecutive points to put Hastings at the half-century mark with four minutes left in the half.

Leading 54-18, sophomore Tathis Arredondo drilled back-to-back threes. A three from Bauer and a two from Marx lifted Hastings to a 65-20 halftime lead. Overall in the second quarter, Hastings would outscore the Flames 40-9, as they shot 64 percent from the field and 50 percent from three. 13 of their 16 field goals came off of assists and 12 Flame turnovers were forced by nine Bronco steals. Marx and Bryant each had 11 points to lead the way at the half.

Freshman McKenna Yates and Arrendando each scored to open the second half. Bryant scored the next two Hastings baskets, then Bose, who had nine points in the quarter, came in off the bench and knocked down a three and a two-point basket to put Hastings up 78-27. Senior Alyssa Baker later converted on a three-point play as the Broncos took a 91-36 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Baker got to the free throw line early in the fourth to get Hastings on the board with two free throws. Bauer drained a three, then after a basket from Mlnarik, senior Savana Kascak's basket got the Broncos to the century mark with seven minutes left.

Leading 111-50, Bauer hit a three to get Hastings within one of the Hastings team points record with 1:24 remaining. On Hastings last possession, a missed three was rebounded and put back by Bauer to break the record right before time expired in the 116-52 win.

For the game, Hastings shot 53 percent with 28 assists on 47 made shots, one shy of that record of 48. They outrebounded the Flames 48-30 and turned them over 26 times, turning it into 39 points. The Broncos got great contributions from everyone, especially the bench, which scored 72 of their points.

Bryant led the way with 15 points and three rebounds. Bose had 14 points and six rebounds, while Marx contributed 13 points and game-eight rebounds. Baker added 12 points, five assists, and three rebounds, while Bauer had 11 points, four rebounds, and four assists. Arredondo concluded the double-digit scorers for the Broncos with 10 points, five assists, four rebounds, and a game-high three steals.

All 13 players that played for the Broncos scored and got a rebound on the record-breaking night. Eight players had at least two steals in their 20-steal performance.

Hastings will host Dakota Wesleyan at 2pm on Saturday, Dec. 7 as we celebrate Christmas at the Lynn. United Way has partnered with the Hastings College Association of Student-Athletes (ASA) for this year's United Way Toy Drive. All new/unused toys collected on Dec. 7th will get you free admission and a free popcorn at the men's and women's games.
