Women's Basketball Forces 42 Turnovers in 100-58 Victory
(Omaha, NE) – The women's basketball team took on College of Saint Mary on Wednesday night, winning by a final of 100-58.
Hastings took a 10-2 lead less than two minutes into the game, led by eight points from senior Macy Bryant. Fellow senior Mariyah Avila continued to grow the lead with four of the next six points for the Broncos, then sophomore Adyson Mlnarik knocked down a three to go up 19-4 at the 5:27 mark of the first quarter. Bryant's three with 3:30 left in the quarter put Hastings up by 18 to give them their largest lead up to that point and they led 28-12 after one.
The Broncos started the second quarter strong as well by scoring the first nine points of the quarter, including seven by Avila. Leading 40-16, Mlnarik drilled another three, then Avila and sophomore McKenna Yates scored layups on back-to-back possessions to take a 47-16 lead with 4:51 left in the half. The Flames would halt the run from there, outscoring the Broncos by three the rest of the quarter.
In the first half, Hastings shot 49 percent from the field and held the Flames to 31 percent. The Broncos forced 26 turnovers, scoring 30 points off of them, and held a 24-22 rebounding advantage. Avila had 17 points and Bryant added 15 points, while junior Bailey Kissinger had seven points and eight rebounds in the opening half.
The third quarter was fairly even, with Hastings outscoring College of Saint Mary, 21-18. Kissinger and sophomore Ann Bose scored four points to start the half. After a 6-0 Flames run, sophomore Josilyn Miller hit from deep. The Flames cut the lead to 26 with 5:15 to go in the quarter, but Hastings scored 13 of the final 21 points of the quarter, which included five points by Kissinger, to go up 78-47.
Avila scored two quick layups to start the fourth and Miller added a steal and layup as well to put Hastings up 84-47 with eight minutes left. Leading 90-55, Bose made two free throws and after a steal, Mlnarik drilled another triple. Hastings reached the 100-point mark with two shots at the line by freshman Catelynn Bargen, as the Broncos took the 100-58 win.
Hastings shot 45 percent from the field and held College of Saint Mary to 32 percent. They had 29 steals by forcing 42 turnovers, two shy of the school record, and scored 53 points off of them.
Avila had a game-high 23 points to go along with three assists and three steals. Kissinger finished with 16 points, nine rebounds, six steals, and four assists. Bryant added 15 points, seven rebounds, and three steals. Mlnarik scored 13 points off the bench and had five steals and three rebounds.
Up next, Hastings will host Nebraska Wesleyan on Monday, Dec. 22 at 12pm.
