Women's Tennis Advances 3 to Finals of Bronco Invite
(Hastings, NE) – The women's tennis team finished up their fall portion of their schedule on Friday and Saturday with their home Bronco Invite, competing against Baker, Doane, and Saint Mary.
In the event, the Broncos saw sophomores Josline Carter and Victoria Harris advance to the open doubles finals and freshmen Cara Ansbach and Lexi Benson advance to the finals in separate singles draws.
Carter and Harris opened their run with a dominant 8-0 win over Baker in the quarterfinals and an 8-2 win over their freshman teammates Reese Beyrouty and Kayleigh Cetak in the semifinals. They would eventually lose to Doane 2-6, 3-6 in a best-of-three set final.
Elsewhere in open doubles, junior Paige Willcoxon and freshman Cara Ansbach won their opening quarterfinal doubles match in a come-from-behind 9-8(4) tiebreak win, before falling 1-8 to Doane in the semifinals.
Freshman Lexi Benson and sophomore Abby Harveson also came from behind to win their play-in match 8-6 over Doane, then lost 0-8 to a different Doane pair. Beyrouty and Cetak won their quarterfinal match 8-5 over Doane before they were matched up against Carter and Harris.
Ansbach won her opening singles match in the 3-4 singles draw over Baker, 8-3, then defeated Saint Mary 8-3 in the semifinals. In the best-of-three set final, she fell 2-6, 4-6 to Doane. In the same singles draw, Willcoxon beat Baker 8-0 in the quarterfinals before losing a tight 7-9 match to Doane in the semifinals.
Benson started her open singles run in the quarterfinals with an 8-2 win over Saint Mary, then won 8-5 over a different Saint Mary player in the semifinals. In the best-of-three set final, she lost 4-6, 1-6 to Doane. In the same draw, Beyrouty lost 6-8 to Doane and Cetak lost 5-8 to Saint Mary in quarterfinals. Freshman Mia Short also competed in the open singles draw, falling 0-8 to Doane in a play-in match.
In the 1-2 singles draw, Harris won her opening quarterfinal match over Saint Mary, 3-8, before falling 4-8 in the semifinals to Doane. Carter lost her quarterfinal match 1-8 to Baker.
Hastings is scheduled to resume their season on Friday, January 31 at 4pm in Kearney, NE against McPherson.
