Women's Tennis Drops Matches to Colorado Mesa and Fort Hays State
(Kearney, NE) – The women's tennis team played Division II Colorado Mesa University in Kearney on Friday, where they lost 7-0. Hastings also fell to Division II Fort Hays State University, 7-0, on Saturday.
The Mavericks took the doubles point by winning at one and three doubles. The number two doubles team of junior Paige Willcoxon and freshman Cara Ansbach trailed 4-1 when the match was stopped following the doubles clinch.
Sophomore Josline Carter had the most success of anyone in the singles matches, winning four total games in her 6-1, 6-3 loss at one singles.
Colorado Mesa won at two, three, four, five, and six singles by losing just three combined games to claim the 7-0 win.
Against Fort Hays State, the one doubles team of Carter and sophomore Victoria Harris, as well as the three doubles team of freshmen Lexi Benson and Kayleigh Cetak last close 6-4 matches. The Tigers won at all three doubles matches to take an early 1-0 lead.
Carter lost a very competitive 7-5 first set to their one singles player, eventually falling 6-2 in the second set. Benson got just one game in the first set at five singles, but had the second set even at five-all, before dropping the next two games to lose the match, 6-1, 7-5.
Cetak managed to win four games in her 6-2, 6-2 loss at six singles, as did Willcoxon in her four singles match (6-4, 6-0). The Tigers won at two and three singles by winning all but four games between the two matches.
Up next, Hastings will play Tabor in a rescheduled match from earlier in the week on Thursday, Feb. 27 at 12pm.
