
Volleyball Extends Win Streak to 3 with Win over Chargers
(Sioux City, IA) – Winners of three of their last four games coming into the game, the Hastings Volleyball team won 3-0 (25-20, 25-15, 25-22) at Briar Cliff on Saturday.
Hastings jumped out to a 12-5 lead in the opening set, after a kill from freshman Makenna Sutter, who had a team-high five kills in the first set. Leading 22-19, the Broncos won three of the next four points to take the first set 25-20, including kills from freshman Londyn Carnes and junior Alexis Pontine.
After taking the first set, Hastings won the first four points of the second set. Briar Cliff won the next two points, but junior Kaitlin Thiebauth got a kill on the next point, the first of her seven in the set. The Broncos held a healthy lead for the rest of the set, then leading 19-13, Hastings won six of the next eight points to take the second set, 25-15.
Hastings appeared to be cruising in the third set with a 5-2 lead, but the Chargers responded by winning eight of the next 10 points to take a 10-7 lead. The Broncos countered that run with a 10-3 run of their own, with four players each having kills. Hastings would not trail the rest of the way as they took the third set 25-22 to seal the win.
Senior Majesta Valasek led the team in kills with 13, along with 11 from Thiebauth. Senior Miriam Miller had a game-high 31 digs, while Pontine had also led both teams with 39 assists.
The Broncos will travel to Crete, NE to play Doane at 7:30pm on Wednesday, Oct. 23 at the Haddix Center.
