
Volleyball Wins Quarterfinal Match, Heads to #1 Northwestern on Wednesday
(Sioux City, IA) – An electric offensive performance gave #5-seed Hastings College the 3-1 win (25-17, 28-26, 22-25, 25-13) over #4-seed Morningside in the GPAC Quarterfinals.
A thrilling night started out with a tight set one. Neither team built a lead of more than two points in set one until a 4-0 run gave the Broncos the lead for good on their way to taking set one, 25-17.
The Broncos trailed 14-18 in set two before going on a 6-1 run to take the lead 20-19. Hastings then fought off two set points from Morningside, eventually winning the set 28-26.
The third set started similar to the first two with a tight score throughout much of the set. The Mustangs found some momentum at the end with a 5-1 run to take set three, 25-22.
The match broke open for the Broncos in set four after an early 10-0 run gave Hastings College the lead for good. The Mustangs couldn't close the gap as the Broncos won the set 25-13, giving them the semifinal win.
Two major contributors to the Broncos offensive performance were junior Kaitlin Thiebauth and senior Majesta Valasek. Thiebauth finished the night hitting a team high .727 with 8 kills. Valasek led in the kill category with 20 on her way to a .465 average. Senior Miriam Miller held it down defensively with 23 digs, and while the assist leaders were juniors Alexis Pontine (27) and Kinzi Havranek (19).
The Broncos advance to play the nationally-ranked #1 Northwestern Red Raiders this Wednesday, November 13 at 7pm in Orange City, IA for a spot in the GPAC Tournament Final.
