Broncos Unable to Pull off Upset of #3 Concordia
(Hastings, NE) – The Broncos came into the game with a four-game winning streak, but #3 Concordia was able to take care of the Broncos in three sets (19-25, 18-25, 17-25).
Hastings won four of the first six points, but Concordia regrouped and took a 11-8 lead. The Bulldogs would not look back in the set, taking the opening period 25-19.
The Broncos again got off to a good start in the second set, leading 4-1 and later 8-6. Concordia responded in a big way as they won the next five points and 10 of the next 12 points. Hastings cut the lead to five on a couple of occasions, but the Bulldogs held on to take the second set 25-18.
The third set started out very tight, as senior Majesta Valasek and junior Alexis Pontine tried to bring the Broncos back from the 2-0 set deficit. Knotted at 12-all, Concordia won 13 of the next 18 points to take the third set convincingly, 25-17.
Hastings was led by Valasek with 15 kills and Pontine with 32 assists. Senior Miriam Miller, who was honored before the match for eclipsing 2000 career digs, moved up to fourth place in school history with her 21-dig outing.
Up next, Hastings will travel to Fremont, NE to play Midland at 7:30pm on Wednesday, Oct. 30.
