Men's Tennis Upends Knights, 5-2
(Minneapolis, MN) – The Hastings Broncos rolled to a 5-2 win over the Martin Luther College Knights to kick off their spring break trip.
Hastings earned the doubles point with freshmen Joel Carter and Alex Hafer taking the #1 doubles match, 6-1, then senior Nick Smeltzer and junior Ethan Mins won #2 doubles, 6-1, as well. Martin Luther picked up a 6-3 win at #3 doubles, but the Broncos took a 1-0 lead going into singles play.
Carter and Smeltzer dominated their matches at #1 and #2 singles by overpowering the Knights, using their serves and groundstrokes to their advantage and dropping just one game between the two matches to go up 3-0.
The Knights won at #3 singles to make it 3-1, but Mins won his first set 6-1 at #4 singles, and after the Knights rallied from a 5-2 second set deficit to tie it at five-all, he clinched the match with a 7-5 second set win. Martin Luther took the #5 singles match, 6-3, 6-4, then freshman Conner George scored the final point for Hastings at #6 singles by winning the first set, 6-4, and later the third set super-tiebreak, 10-4.
Hastings will conclude its Minnesota spring break trip with a match against Crown College on Friday, Mar. 14 at 4pm.
