Baseball Swept by Northwestern
Orange City, IA – The Hastings College baseball team got swept by Northwestern 5-4 and 13-10 on Friday afternoon.
The Red Raiders jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead through two innings but in the third, Hastings was able to get on the board with a Jarod Delgado RBI triple.
Then the Broncos tied the game in the fourth when Tyler Welsh belted a home run over the left field fence to make it 2-2.
Northwestern regained the lead with a run in the fourth and fifth, but HC would tie things up once again with the long ball as Tristan Martinez went yard in the sixth as things were tied 4-4.
The Red Raiders created some trouble in the bottom of the sixth getting runners into scoring position with no outs. Ethan Buckner would then single to right to score one but Martinez came up firing as he would throw out Mason Porepp trying to score from second to keep it a one run game.
Hastings did threaten in the top of the seventh when Tyler Kissler tripled to center with two outs, but a pop out ended the game at 5-4.
Welsh went 2-for-3 with a RBI while Delgado went 2-for-4 with a RBI in the game one loss.
In game two Hastings picked up a quick run in the first when Jace Valdez reached base on an error allowing Delgado to score. Northwestern came back with four runs in the bottom of the first but the Broncos came right back with a big third inning.
Dylan Otto got things rolling with a one out single up the middle followed by a two out single from Jaden Stone. Delgado then pierced a single into left to score Otto followed by a Kissler single with an error which allowed by Stone and Delgado to score to tie things up 4-4.
The game quieted down until the Red Raiders put up five runs in the sixth and two runs in the seventh and eighth to go up 13-6 heading to the ninth.
The Broncos were looking for a big time rally as Kissler got the ninth started by reaching via an error. Valdez then singled followed by a walk to pinch hitter Mason Masur to load the bases. Welsh then ripped a two RBI double to make it 13-8. Martinez then drove home Masur with a RBI single and the Brody Severin got in on the act with a RBI single to left as HC now trailed 13-10 with just one out. But it was the dreaded double play ball that would end the threat and the game for the Broncos.
Stone finished game two going 3-for-6 with two RBIs while Welsh went 2-for-5 with two RBIs. Martinez went 2-for-4 with a RBI in the loss.
