Broncos Falls Short at Bellevue, 6-2
(Omaha, NE) – The Hastings baseball team took on the Bellevue Bruins for the second time this season, improving from their last meeting, but falling 6-2.
Hastings got the first hit of the game, a double from senior Elijah Merritt to right field, but the Bruins were able to force two ground balls to end the inning. Bellevue's first hit came on an RBI single in the third inning after a walk and advance on a groundout. They scored a second run two batters later to go up 2-0 after three innings.
After no scoring in the fourth and fifth inning by either team, Hastings got on the board in the sixth. With one out, senior Alliskair Descartes reached on an infield single and junior Jaden Stone laced a double to center field to put two runners in scoring position. Freshman Jordin Albertson skied one to the left fielder in the next at bat, deep enough for both runners to move up 90 feet on the sac fly and score the first run. The Bruins got out of the inning with a groundout still ahead, 2-1.
Bellevue answered back with an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth and hit a two-run home run in the seventh to go up 5-1. The Bruins got another run via the long ball on a solo shot in the eighth, taking a 6-1 lead.
In the ninth, Albertson reached first on an error and junior Tristan Martinez singled to open the inning. They moved up to second and third on a wild pitch, and after a strikeout, Merritt drove in Albertson on a sac fly. Bellevue ended the game on a flyout in the next at-bat to secure the 6-2 win.
Hastings used nine pitchers, with the first seven of them throwing one inning each, as they look to gain a rhythm going into their weekend series. Freshman Alex Wilson, junior Markus Miller, and senior Alec Fichter each pitched scoreless innings today against the Bruins, with Miller and Fichter recording one strikeout.
Up next, Hastings will play their first home games of the season, beginning with a double-header on Saturday, Mar. 1 against Mayville State. The first game will begin at 1pm at Duncan Field.
