Tigers Take Two From Broncos in Season Finale
(Crete, NE) – In the final doubleheader of the season, the Hastings Broncos fell to Doane 10-0 in game one and 7-6 in game two.
Game one belonged to Doane from the start as they put four runs on the board in the first inning, coming on a two-run triple, a groundout, and a single to take a 4-0 lead.
They added a run on an error in the second and an RBI single in the third to take a 6-0 lead. Another run came to score in the fifth and they tacked on three runs in the seventh to win 10-0.
At the plate Hastings had a couple chances to score with two base runners on in the fifth and sixth innings, but double plays spoiled both chances. Senior Dylan Otto was 2-3 in game one to lead Hastings at the plate.
In game two, Hastings struck first with a one-out single by junior Coletin Renn and walks to sophomore Jared Delgado and senior Elijah Merritt to load the bases. A third straight walk, this time to freshman Eddie Henchek, forced in a run, then with two outs, a base hit from junior Jace Valdez brought in another run to put the Broncos ahead 2-0.
Doane got a run back in the bottom half of the first, but Hastings answered right back with two runs of their own. Junior Jaden Stone ripped a double down the left field line and Renn moved him over to third with a single. Renn moved to second on a wild pitch, then the Broncos scored two runs on an error that was initially hit by Delgado to go up 4-1. Doane answered back in the second with two runs to make it 4-3.
No scoring occurred again until the sixth inning when Valdez led off with a single and scored three batters later on an RBI double from Stone. Doane tied it up in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single.
In the eighth, senior Alliskair Descartes began a two-out rally by getting hit by a pitch. Stone walked and a batted ball by Renn was thrown away by the Doane catcher, allowing junior Jake Poris, who was running for Descartes, and Stone to come around and score and go up 6-4.
However, Doane tied it up with a one-out, two-run RBI single in the eighth, then walked it off with a two-out RBI single to right center to defeat the Broncos 7-6 in game two.
Renn led the Broncos with three hits in game two and scored two runs, while Stone and Valdez each had two hits.
The loss concludes the season for the Broncos as they turn to the offseason in preparations for next season.
