Broncos Begin Doane Series with a Win

(Crete, NE) – The Hastings Broncos competed against the Doane Tigers in their final series of the year. On the first day of the four-game series, Hastings won game one, 3-1, and lost game two, 4-0.

Hastings was unable to capitalize with the bases loaded in the first inning, but scored a run to start the second. Senior Mason Masur walked and with one out, senior Alliskair Descartes doubled in Masur to go up 1-0.

No more scoring occurred until the fourth when Masur walked to start the inning and junior Tristan Martinez reached on a Tiger error, putting runners on second and third. Descartes brough both runners home with a single up the middle to make it 3-0.

Doane hit a solo home run in the bottom of the inning, but Hastings held the lead for the last three innings to get the 3-1 win. Doane was able to get two runners on in the seventh with two outs, but Delgado picked off the runner at first base to end the game.

Sophomore Jared Delgado and junior Coletin Renn each recorded two hits in game one, while junior pitcher Markus Miller threw seven innings, giving up only one run on eight hits, striking out four.

Hastings had a great opportunity to start game two, loading the bases all with two outs. An infield single by Delgado and walks to senior Elijah Merritt and freshman Eddie Henchek put the pressure on the Tigers, but Doane got out of the inning on a flyout to center. Doane eventually broke the scoreless tie in the third with a two-out rally, recording four straight hits and scoring three runs to take a 3-0 lead.

Doane added another run in the fourth with the leadoff runner reaching and eventually scoring on a groundout to go up 4-0. The Bronco pitching kept the Broncos within striking distance, as the offense tried to put together a rally.

In the ninth, senior Elijah Merritt singled to open the inning and with two outs, Masur reached base, but the Mustangs closed out the game with a popout to second.

Delgado had a multi-hit game in game two, going 2-4 at the plate. Senior James Velasquez pitched five innings, allowing four runs on nine hits, adding five strikeouts. Senior Alec Fichter pitched three scoreless in relief, giving up on only one hit and striking out two batters.

Up next, Hastings will conclude their season with a doubleheader against the Tigers beginning at 1pm in Crete, NE.
