
Baseball Swept by Midland
Hastings, NE – The Hastings College baseball team took on Midland for a Sunday afternoon doubleheader losing game one 4-3 in eight innings before dropping game two 4-3 as well out on Duncan Field.
Lane Harris was on the mound in game one and did a great job keeping the Warrior bats in check for the first two innings. This allowed the Bronco bats to go to work as Alliskair Descartes got things going with a one out triple to left center. Cam McKenzie brought him home on a grounder to third as he was able to reach due to an error.
Hastings would go up 2-0 in the second when Jared Delgado reached due to a walk and moved to second on the Mason Masur sac bunt. He then scored on the RBI single from Jace Valdez.
Midland picked up a run in the third but HC countered taking advantage of a Midland error and then used a double steal as Descartes stole home to make it 3-1.
The Warriors fought back and eventually tied the game in the sixth. The game remained tied through seven innings so it went to extras where Midland took the lead 4-3 on the Nathaniel Reyes RBI triple as he pinch hit for Deven Gomez.
The Broncos would get a two out single from Dylan Otto but that would be it as Midland took game one 4-3.
The Broncos finished the game with five hits compared to nine for MU. Valdez led the way in game one going 2-for-3 with a RBI.
Harris went 5.0 innings giving up two runs on five hits with five strikeouts in the no decision.
The Broncos once again jumped out to an early lead as Valdez picked up a double to left center in the second to put runners in scoring position with no outs. Hastings took the lead on a RBI groundout by Santo Chirco but couldn't bring home the second run.
After the Warriors tied the game in the third, HC would get a one out double from Descartes and after a wild pitch, Matt Lucero singled him home with two outs for the 2-1 lead.
Midland came right back to tie the game in the fifth but Hastings would take advantage of an error in the sixth to regain the lead. Masur hit a towing pop up to short but Conner Petersen misplayed it allowing Masur to get to second. Following a sac bunt from Lucero, Delgado hit a line drive to center which was deep enough to plate Masur for the 3-2 lead.
Cooper Gierhan came in looking for the save but Midland found a way getting a RBI single from Jacob Liquori and a RBI fielder's choice from Joshua Hardamon as Delgado fired home but the ball bounced in front of Santos allowing the go ahead run to score.
Otto came up with a leadoff single and then Chirco moved pinch runner Julius Cortes to second with a bunt. But a pop out and a strikeout ended the game as Midland came away with the sweep.
Markus Miller picked up another no decision going 5.0 innings giving up two runs on six hits with two strikeouts. Jaden Jurgensmier pitched a near perfect sixth inning.
Hastings finished with just four hits in game two with Otto, Valdez, Lucero and Descartes each recording a hit.
Hastings is now 9-15 (1-3) on the year and will be back in action Saturday Mar. 23 hitting the road for a doubleheader against No. 8 Doane with first pitch set for 1:00 pm in Crete, NE.
