Hastings Settles for Split with Mayville State
Hastings, NE – The Hastings College baseball team finished its four game series with Mayville State on Saturday by dropping game one 3-1 in nine innings before coming back to win game two 5-3 for the series split out at Duncan Field.
The Comets would get out to an early 1-0 lead in the first and could have been 2-0 if it wasn't for Tristan Martinez throwing another runner out at the plate. That lead held into the fifth where Tyler Kissler got the Broncos' first hit with a double to right. Brody Severin bunted pinch runner TJ Nuetzel over to third and Martinez brought him home with a sac fly to right to tie the game 1-1.
Hastings definitely had its chances in the sixth and seventh to score having the bases loaded in both innings only to see double plays end both threats as this one went to extra innings.
But MSU would get two runs in the top of the ninth and would secure the game one victory over the Broncos. Kissler led the way in game one by going 2-for-3.
Hayden Zaffino went 6.0 innings giving up one run on three hits in the no decision.
Game two was al Broncos early as Lane Harris was dealing on the mound. Harris would get through the first five innings unscathed and the Bronco offense found some life early on.
Eli Merritt picked up a single after Jared Delgado walked to put runners on first and second. Then Julius Cortez walked to load the bases. Another double play nearly ended the threat but Delgado did score on the play to make it 1-0. Then Santo Chirco doubled to center to plate Merritt as HC was now up 2-0.
Harris worked through a bit of a jam in the third and then the error bug hit the Comets. Three errors in the inning led to three runs for the Broncos as they opened up a 5-0 lead that carried into the sixth inning.
Harris would get into trouble in the sixth as the Comets picked up three runs on three hits but Aaron Elgersma came it recording the final five outs to give the Broncos the 5-3 victory.
Hastings managed just three hits but took advantage of some errors by MSU to picked up the victory.
Elgersma worked a perfect 2.0 innings with three strikeouts.
Hastings is now 5-8 on the year and will be back in action Tuesday Mar. 5 heading down to Arizona to play with its first game coming against Ottawa (AZ) with first pitch set for 6:00 pm down in Surprise, AZ.
