Baseball Splits With Mayville State
Hastings, NE – The Hastings College baseball team played its first home games of the season by hosing Mayville State defeating the Comets 2-0 in game one before losing game two 3-1 in eight innings out at Duncan Field.
We had a pitcher's dual breakout in game one as James Velasquez for the Broncos was dealing on the mound keeping the Comets off balance all game long. The same could be said for Connor Cory for MSU as he led the Broncos scoreless through the first three innings.
Hastings finally got something going in the fourth as Alliskair Descartes got the inning started with a single to right. He then moved to second on the Jaden Stone groundout. Mason Masur then ripped a line drive down the left field line for a RBI double to give HC the early 1-0 lead. Tyler Welsh followed suit with a high fly ball deep to left field for a double, but Masur had to wait to make sure it wasn't caught as the Broncos had runners on second and third with one out. Unfortunately, and fielder's choice that cut a run down at the plate and a line out to end the inning.
The Comets had a chance to tie the game in the sixth when Carson Lundmark single to right, but Tristan Martinez came up firing and easily threw out Chris Shopbell trying to score from second to keep it 1-0.
It was the Bronco offense that took advantage of a MSU error in the bottom of the sixth as Jaden Stone started things off by getting hit by a pitch. He then moved to third on a wild pickoff attempt by the pitcher. Stone would come home on the Welsh RBI sac fly to center to make it 2-0.
The Broncos would then turn to closer Cole Peterson to finish off the Comets and he sat down Mayville State in order to collect the save as the Broncos won 2-0.
Masur and Welsh led the way with a hit and RBI each in the win. Velasquez moves to 3-0 on the year as he went 6.0 innings giving up just three hits while striking out five. Peterson recorded his second save of the season.
Game two was also a pitcher's dual but this time it was the Comets that jumped out to the early 1-0 lead in the third. HC bounced back as Stone picked up a 2-out single and moved to second on a wild pitch. Then Masur sent a looping single to left that allowed Stone to score before Masur was tagged out trying to advance to second following the throw.
Game two would end up in extra innings the MSU took advantage of two errors on the same play to go up 3-1 in the eighth. The Bronco bats were unable to get anything going in the bottom of the eighth and settled for the split.
Otto and Masur each finished with two hits in game two. Markus Miller went 5.0 innings giving up one run on four hits with five strikeouts.
Hastings is now 4-7 and will be back in action Saturday Mar. 2 for another doubleheader against Mayville State with first pitch set for 11:00 am out at Duncan Field in Hastings, NE.
