Baseball Drops a Pair to Mount Marty
Yankton, SD – The Hastings College baseball team came into its final four game series with Mount Marty with the slimmest of chances to qualify for the Great Plains Athletic Conference tournament but would need to sweep the Lancers while getting some help from Briar Cliff. Unfortunately the Broncos lost the first two games 4-3 and 9-1 on Thursday afternoon.
The Broncos fell behind 4-0 while struggling to find its bats through the first five innings as Hastings went down in order the first four while a double play ended the fifth as Cam McKenzie picked up Hastings' first hit of the game. This was McKenzie's first collegiate hit.
Things would get interesting in the sixth as Hastings finally got to Lancer starter Jett Hasegawa. Matt Lucero led the inning off with a single to center followed by a single from Tristan Martinez. Jace Valdez moved the runners into scoring position with a sac bunt and then Mason Masur picked up RBI 12 and 13 with a single to left. Jaden Stone followed suit with a single to right allowing Masur to advance to third. Tyler Kissler picked up a RBI as he beat out a double play grounder as Masur scored to make it 4-3. But two strikeouts would end the rally.
Hastings was unable to threaten in the seventh getting just one single from Lucero as the Lancer came away with the 4-3 victory in game one.
Lucero led the way at the plate going 2-for-3 with a run scored. Masur went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Jackson Grote had a solid outing in relief going 2.2 innings giving up no runs and just two hits.
Game two was all Mount Marty racking up nine runs on nine hits. The Broncos picked up its lone run in the seventh on a RBI groundout by James Velasquez to avoid the shutout.
Hastings is now 12-32 (6-18) on the year and will finish up its season with two more games against Mount Marty Saturday Apr. 29 with first pitch set for 1:00 pm up in Yankton, SD.
