Baseball Picks up Split on Day one of RussMatt Invitational
Davenport, FL – The Hastings College baseball team picked up a split on day one of the RussMatt Invitational dropping game one to Cornerstone (Mich.) 4-1 and then picked up the walk-off 5-4 victory in game two on Friday.
Game one saw the Broncos struggle at the plate against Grant Young scoring just one run on two hits. That one run came in the top of the fifth when Tyler Welsh singled up the middle to score James Velasquez from second that made it a 3-1 ball game at the time.
Danny Wisor had one rough inning in the bottom of the second where he gave up a three run home run that proved to be the difference in the 4-1 loss.
Game two had a very different feel as it was the Broncos jumping out to a quick lead. The Broncos took advantage of a Cornerstone error when Brody Severin hit a grounder to second where Evan Shirley mishandled the ball allowing Jace Valdez to score for the early 1-0 lead.
Then, Hastings put up a crooked number in the third where Jaden Stone began the inning with an infield single to second. Eli Merritt then singled to right. Two batters later, Severin singled to left as the ball got past JC Salinas on the relay throw to advance to second. Stone was able to score from second to make it 2-0. Then Tyler Kissler singled to center scoring Severing and Merritt to push the lead to 4-0.
The Golden Eagles battled back to tie the game and forced extra innings. Cooper Gierhan would get CU to go down in order in the eighth giving the offense a chance to end the game.
Tyler Welsh led the inning off by getting hit by a pitch. Severin then walked followed by a sac bunt by Kissler to put runners in scoring position with one out. Dylan Otto was intentionally walked to load the bases which brought up Matt Lucero. Lucero sent a line drive into right to bring home pinch runner Tristan Martinez for the walk-off victory.
Gierhan picked up the win by pitching 3.0 innings giving up one run on three hits while striking out two. Kissler led the way at the plate going 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
Hastings is now 4-10 on the year and will be back in action Saturday Mar. 11 continuing play at the RussMatt Invitational taking on Thomas (Gor.) at 1:00 pm down in Lakeland, FL.
