Baseball Drops Two Games to William Penn
Winfield, KS – The Hastings College baseball team opened its 2023 campaign losing 12-0 and 11-5 to William Penn on Saturday afternoon.
Game one was all WPU as the Broncos managed just four hits in the 12-0 loss. Jaden Stone, Eli Merritt, Tyler Kissler and Thomas Hartman picked up hits in game one.
James Velasquez did well in relief pitching 3.1 innings giving up just one run on three hits while striking out five.
In game two, the Statesmen got off to another fast start opening up a 10-0 lead before the Bronco bats finally woke up. In the bottom of the third, Hastings got on the board when Brody Severin roped a single to right which scored Dylan Otto and Stone to make it 10-2.
WPU picked up a home run in the top of the fourth but the Hastings bats tried to keep the Broncos in the game picking up a run in the fifth. Welsh stepped up with one out and ripped a RBI double to right center as Otto scored again to make it 11-3.
Then Hastings picked up two more runs in the sixth to make things a bit more interesting. Stone stepped up with runners on first and third with one out as he hit a line drive that was caught out in left but Jaden Jurgensmier tagged up and scored to make it 11-4. Then Trent Smith smacked a double to left center that scored Tristan Martinez as the Broncos were within six at 11-5. Unfortunately, that would be all the run support the Broncos would get losing game two 11-5.
Stone had his best game as a Bronco going 3-for-3 with a RBI and a run scored. Welsh and Severin each finished going 2-for-4 while combining for three RBIs.
Hastings is now 0-2 on the year and will be back in action Sunday Feb. 12 staying in Winfield, KS to take on Southwestern in a doubleheader with first pitch set for noon.
