#17 Broncos Dual Midland, Compete at Warrior Open

(Fremont, NE) – It came down to a tiebreak at the very end, but the Hastings Broncos came up just short in a 23-23 tiebreak by fifth criteria, as Midland had more technical points than Hastings in the dual. On Saturday, Hastings also competed at the Midland Warrior Open.

Midland won at 103 by forfeit and earned three points in their win by winning by decision at 110, while junior Rayleigh Guyer was able to secure a point for Hastings in the match. Junior Ruby Guerrero won via forfeit at 117 and the Warriors took 124 by forfeit as well to go up 13-6.

Junior Larissa Kaz, ranked #16, won at 131 with a 15-0 tech fall win over Midland's Taylor Hood. The Warriors secured a forfeit win at 138 and won by tech fall at 145 to go up, 22-10.

At 160, freshman Izzy Deeds, ranked #17, stepped up and picked up a 6-2 decision win to make it 23-13 with two bouts left. Senior Marissa Patterson, ranked #12, came through with a pin at the 1:07 mark in the final contested match at 180 and junior Taylor Rickley, ranked #16, took the 207 bout by forfeit. 

On Saturday at the Warrior Open at 180, Rickley began her day at 207 with a pin over Liliana Martinez of Doane less than a minute in and pinned her Friends opponent as well to move on to the semifinals. She lost to Martha Hinneh of Southeast Community College by tech fall, but recovered quickly by pinning Sioux Falls' Zoe Adam at the 5:39 mark. In the third place match, Rickley dominated 15th-ranked Skyler Bruno of Waldorf by pinning her 41 seconds into their battle to go 4-1 in the Open.

Patterson had a bye in her first round match at 180, then made quick work of her Doane opponent by pinning her 23 seconds into the match to advance to the semifinals. Patterson lost by fall to Missouri Valley's Elizabeth Hubbard, then exited the Open after her second loss in the consolation semifinals to take sixth with a record of 2-3.

Freshman Emma Stice won her first round match at 145 by forfeit and went on to the quarterfinals with an 8-0 decision win over Grand View. She got pinned at the 4:46 mark in the quarterfinals and was pinned at the 2:51 mark to Friends' Heidi Schultz, finishing 2-2 on Saturday.Junior Brianna 

Junior Brianna Miller had a first round bye at 138 and pinned her opponent at the 2:44 mark to advance to the quarterfinals. She then lost by fall in the quarterfinals before falling a minute into her first consolation bout to end her day at 2-2.

Also at 145, freshman Aubrey Sharbono lost by tech fall in round one, but rebounded with a pin in her first consolation match over four minutes into the bout. Later, she pinned her Wayne State opponent after just 14 seconds before losing by fall in her third consolation match, going 2-2 on the day.

At 160, freshman Brooke Schilke, ranked #20, dropped her opening match on a late fall, but managed a late pin over Hawkeye Community College in her first consolation match following a bye, then dropped her next match to Doane, ending with a record of 2-2.

Freshman Mandy Perez dropped her opening bout at 180, then defeated Wayne State by an 11-0 tech fall in her first consolation match. Her loss to Doane in the second consolation match ended her day at 1-2.

Hastings will host a tridual on Wednesday, Feb. 8 against Chadron State and Fort Hays State beginning at 5pm in Kiewit Gymnasium.
