Hastings, NE - There was a raucus crowd on hand as the student section showed up in all white making thier presence felt as the Hastings College volleyball team rode the energy wave to a 26-24, 25-23, 25-21 sweep over Doane on Wednesday night inside Lynn Farrell Arena.
In set one, Doane led for most of the set holding a 21-19 edge before Miriam Miller (FR/Lincoln, NE) picked up a kill and then an attack error by Doane's Jaime Renshaw tied the set 21-21. After a service error by Hastings, the Lady Broncos tied the set off an attack error by Genna Ryan-Piasecki.
Another service error pushed the Tigers back into the lead but Hastings took advantage of a bad set by Renshaw to tie it again and then a Miller kill set up set point but Doane's Gabby Menghini picked up a kill to tie it 24-24.
Hastings then went to Amani Monroe (SR/Colorado Springs, CO) in the middle for the kill and then another attack error from Doane handed set one over to Hastings at 26-24.
HC exploded out of the gate in set two opening up a 6-0 lead as Emily Krolikowski (SR/Cairo, NE) started the set with three straight kills. Krolikowski would get another kill along with Makenna Asher (SO/Hastings, NE) before Doane had to use a timeout.
DU didn't take long to get back into the set and eventually took a 21-20 lead. Hastings didn't flinch as Monroe tied things up with a kill and after an attack error from Simonie Mendenhall, Krolikowski picked up a kill and it was set point at 24-22. The Tigers answered with a kill by Manghini but Krolikowski made sure to put away the next point with a kill as Hastings now led 2-0.
In set three, neither team led by more than three points as the set was tied 21-21 where Hastings took a timeout after Doane had just scored the last two points. Coming out of the timeout, Sydney Mullin (SR/North Platte, NE) teamed up with Asher for the block sending the arena into a frenzy. An attack error by Ryan-Piasecki made it 23-21 and then Krolikowski crushed a kill to set up match point. Then Grace Branson (FR/Lawrence, KS) and Mullin teamed up for the block and a thunderous roar came out of the student section as Hastings earned the sweep.
Krolikowski had another great outing as she finished with a match high 15 kills hitting .364 to along with a solo block. Mullin added nine kills, Miller finished with seven kills and Asher added six kills. Jaisee Stinson (JR/Omaha, NE) finished with a double-double with 18 assists and 12 digs.
Statistically the match was very even as Hastings finished with a hitting percentage of .208 to .202 for Doane. Hastings finished with 44 kills to 43 for the Tigers and assists were 37-to-35 in favor of Doane. Hastings finished with three service aces to none for Doane.
Hastings improves to 9-0 (1-0) on the year and will be back in action Friday hitting the road to take part in the Labor Day Classic where the Lady Broncos will face Dakota State at 11:00 am and the Life at 3:00 pm in North Sioux City, SD.
