Big Third Quarter Pushes Briar Cliff Past Women's Basketball
Hastings, NE – The Hastings College women's basketball team saw its game against Briar Cliff slip away in the third quarter as the Lady Broncos fell 83-71 on Thursday night inside Lynn Farrell Arena.
Things were looking good for Hastings in the early goings building an early seven point lead following a layup from Allison Bauer and then a Bauer three made it 14-7 with 3:26 to go in the first quarter. Briar Cliff then made a run at the end of the first with a quick 4-0 run to make it 19-17 heading to the second quarter.
The Chargers would end up taking the lead but Katharine Hamburger hit a three to put HC back up 22-21 early in the second. BCU did build out a five points lead but a couple of Kiernan Paulk free throws and a three from Miriam Miller tied things at 27 with 4:56 to play in the half.
BCU would maintain the lead until Mariyah Avila drained a three to tie it and then Sarah Treffer connected from downtown to put Hastings up 37-34. The Chargers came back to tie things at 38 before Paulk hit two more free throws as the Lady Broncos held a 40-38 lead at halftime.
Then the third quarter came where Briar Cliff hit 64.7 percent (11-for-17) of its shots and went 3-for-5 from downtown while Hastings shot just 20 percent (2-for-10) from the floor. BCU out scored HC 29-11 in the third and that proved to be the difference in the game.
Bauer led the way off the bench with 13 points on 5-for-9 shooting including going a perfect 3-for-3 from behind the arc. Alyssa Baker was the other Lady Bronco in double figures with 10 points. Avila and Treffer each added nine points.
Hastings shot 37.5 percent (21-for-56) while Briar Cliff shot 50 percent (30-for-60). Rebounding favored BCU 38-to-37 while HC only committed 13 turnovers compared to 22 for BCU.
Hastings is now 6-6 (4-4) on the year and will be back in action Monday Dec. 19 heading down to Arizona to compete in a couple games and will take on SAGU with tipoff set for 1:00 pm down in Phoenix, AZ.
