Women's Basketball Unable to Over Come Slow Start Against Vikings
Des Moines, IA – The Hastings College women's basketball team hit the road for the first time this season where the Lady Broncos fell to Grand View 67-56 on Wednesday night.
Hastings got off to a rocky start right from the tip as the Vikings opened up a 20-6 lead that had Jina Douglas calling two of her timeouts in the first quarter of play. Grand View would end up leading 22-10 after one quarter of play.
Neither team got off to a good start in the second quarter as it took nearly four and a half minutes before someone found a bucket when Dawson Knode connected on a mid-range jumper to make it 22-12. The Vikings pushed its lead to as many as 14 points in the quarter before a Katharine Hamburger three made it 30-20 and then Carley Leners got it down to eight with a driving layup with just under a minute to play in the half. The teams traded a free throw as Hastings trailed 31-23 at the break.
The lead for Grand View grew to as much as 18 points in the third quarter while Hastings was only able to get the deficit back to single digits just three times before falling 67-56.
Hastings struggled from the floor shooting just 35.6 percent (21-for-59) and 22.2 percent (6-for-27) from behind the arc. Turnovers were also a problem for HC committing 22 compared to just 13 for Grand View.
Kiernan Paulk was the lone Bronco in double figures as she finished with 13 points on 5-for-7 shooting while also pulling down seven boards to lead the team. Allison Bauer added nine points off the bench along with Dawson Knode while Knode led the team with 12 rebounds. Olivia Kugler led the team with five assists.
Hastings falls to 2-1 on the year and will be back in action Wednesday Nov. 16 opening up Great Plains Athletic Conference action at Doane with tipoff set for 6:00 pm in Crete, NE.
