
Softball Picks Up Split vs. Flames; Baker Claims 400th Career Victory
(Hastings, NE) – The Hastings College Broncos made history in a tightly contested doubleheader against the College of Saint Mary Flames, clinching a 1-0 victory in game one that marked Head Coach Troy Baker's 400th career win. In game two the Broncos lost by the final score of 1-0.
The game opened with a scoreless first inning, as both teams' defenses held strong.
In the bottom of the second, the Broncos broke the deadlock. Senior Shey Storesund delivered a sharp single down the left field line, moving Junior Katyn Kappler to second. Senior Lexie Mudloff crossed home plate on the play, scoring what would be the game's only run.
Junior pitcher Kiera Brack pitched an outstanding game, pitching all seven innings without allowing a run. She allowed just four hits and struck out two to earn the win. Kappler and Storesund were each 2-3 at the plate as part of the seven Bronco hits.
The 1-0 final not only secured a hard-fought win for the Broncos but also cemented a major milestone in Coach Baker's storied career.
In the second game of the doubleheader, the tables turned as the Flames scored the lone run of the game in the top of the third inning on a solo home run, resulting in a 1-0 defeat for the Broncos.
Hastings had a big opportunity to score in the bottom of the sixth, loading the bases with one out. Mudloff hit a lined shot to third that was snared by the Flames, then Kappler flew out to end the scoring threat.
Freshman Dani Sitts threw all seven innings, giving up just the one run on the deep ball. She allowed six hits with only one walk. Hastings was held to four hits in the game as the Flames pitching was good enough to earn the 1-0 win.
