Lancers Narrowly Defeat Broncos, 58-54
(Hastings, NE) – The men's basketball team came close to picking up their third win in five games, but the Mount Marty Lancers held on to win, 58-54, on Wednesday night.
Mount Marty's defense stood out early on, which led to an 11-3 lead. Hastings started to chip back into the game from there with threes from junior David Ogunlade and sophomore Ben Boudreau to make it 13-9, but the Lancers responded with a 5-0 spurt to go up 18-9 and force a Hastings timeout with 11:30 left in the first half.
Trailing 22-11, sophomore David Hageman hit from behind the arc and inside the paint, finishing off the three-point play with a free throw to cut it to five. Junior Myles Simon scored the next four points for Hastings before a Hageman jumper brought the lead down to two with 4:41 left. Each team scored six points the rest of the half to make it a 31-29 Lancer lead at the break.
Mount Marty held a 20-11 edge in rebounding through 20 minutes and both teams shot just over 40 percent from the field. Simon led Hastings in scoring at the half with 10 points.
The Lancers briefly extended the lead to four at 35-31 early in the second, but Binder splashed in a three and Boudreau drilled another one about a minute later to put Hastings up two with 15:05 left. Mount Marty came back with a 6-0 run, then Binder hit a big three to break the scoring drought at the 11:52 mark.
Simon kept the Broncos close with their next six points over the course of six minutes and Mount Marty clinging to a two-point lead with 5:52 remaining. Trailing by five, junior DaRon Hall nailed a three with 2:49 on the clock.
Neither team scored until the Lancers hit a three-pointer with 38 seconds left as Hastings went empty on its two offensive possessions before the three. After the three, Hall misfired from downtown. The Lancers got the rebound, but missed the front end of the one-and-one after getting fouled with 17 seconds left.
Boudreau and Binder could not get their threes to fall on the possession after and Mount Marty held on for the 58-54 road win. Hastings held the Lancers to 35 percent shooting in the second half, but shot just 30 percent themselves. For the game, Mount Marty outrebounded Hastings, 45-32. Hastings stayed in the game by converting nine turnovers into 20 points.
Simon led Hastings in scoring with 16 points, along with four rebounds. Hageman contributed 13 points, eight rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Boudreau stuffed the stat sheet as well with nine points, along with team highs in rebounds and assists with seven and six, respectively.
