
Broncos Take Down Panthers in Home Opener
(Hastings, NE) – The Hastings Broncos came away with their first win of the young 2024 season, defeating the York Panthers 89-78.
Hastings jumped out to a 13-6 with two threes from junior Rufus Rusholme-Cobb and another from junior David Ogunlade. They continued to add onto their lead, growing it 22-12 on a bucket from sophomore Hunter Hill.
York cut the lead to two on a three-pointer with 8:32 left in the first half and tied it at 31-all four minutes later. A quick 6-0 from Hastings that was capped by a three from freshman Maverick Binder forced a York timeout. With the Broncos leading by four, junior DaRon Hall hit a three in the closing seconds of the half to give Hastings a 45-38 halftime lead.
The first five points belonged to the Broncos in the second half and after another three from Binder, York called a timeout just over two minutes in. Sophomore Quinn Johnson gave Hastings its largest lead of the day of 17 points 10:41 left.
A quick 7-0 run got the Panthers back in it, but Hastings held its double-digit lead until the last two minutes of the game. York cut the lead to nine with 1:39 left, but Hall and sophomore Ben Boudreau hit free throws to close out the game, winning 89-78.
Hall had a game-high 23 points, along with seven rebounds and five assists. Johnson added 15 points and 16 rebounds, while Boudreau had 15 points off the bench. Ogunlade also finished in double figures with 13 points and six rebounds. As a team, Hastings shot 56 percent from the field and 42 percent from three.
