Lancers Use Big First Half Run To Drop Broncos
(Yankton, SD) – Trying to earn a momentous win going into the Thanksgiving break, the Mount Marty Lancers spoiled those plans, as they defeated the Broncos 72-47 on Tuesday. The Lancers controlled the game from the tip, holding the Broncos to 24 percent shooting in the first half with a 19-10 rebound advantage.
Mount Marty scored the first four points of the game, though Hastings did manage to take a 9-8 lead six minutes in. Junior DaRon Hall, fresh off a career-high 28 points last game, hit a pair of threes, then junior Cameron Coraggio's three gave the Broncos the brief lead.
From there the Lancer defense took over, not allowing a Hastings field goal over the next 11 minutes as they went on a 20-2 run. Sophomore David Hageman broke the field goal drought with 3:25 left in the half on a layup, then after a Lancer bucket, sophomore Ben Boudreau hit a three off a pass from Hageman to get the Broncos to within 14.
Boudreau hit a couple free throws later in the half, but the Lancers expanded the lead to 16 on a buzzer-beating three to end the first half at 34-18. Hall's six points led the way in the first half for the Broncos, along with five from Boudreau.
Hastings came out stronger in the second half, starting with two free throws from junior Myles Simon. Mount Marty grew the lead to 21 at 43-22, but Hastings went on a 10-2 run from there. Simon got a bucket plus the foul, then Hageman drained a three. Junior David Ogunlade got to the rim for the layup and Boudreau capped the run with a three.
Mount Marty again grew the lead to 16, however Hastings responded with a 5-0 run on a jumper from Hall and a second three in the half from Hageman with 10 minutes left. The Lancers went on a critical 8-1 run that ended with 5:27 left, putting the game out of reach.
Both teams started emptying their bench around the five-minute mark. The Lancers grew the lead up to 23, eventually winning the contest 72-47. Hall led the team in scoring with 11, followed closely by Hageman's 10 off the bench and nine points from Boudreau.
Hastings will return from Thanksgiving break at the USF Classic, hosted by the University of St. Francis (IL) in Joliet, IL. Their first matchup will be against Saint Xavier (IL) on Saturday, Nov. 30 at 8pm.
