Broncos Open Season With 3-0 Sweep of Oklahoma City
(Seward, Nebraska) – In their first match of the 2024 season, the Hastings College volleyball team cruised to a three-set victory over the Oklahoma City Stars as part of the Bulldog Bash in Seward, NE by a score of 25-11, 27-25 and 25-22.
The Broncos controlled the first set as they never fell behind in the opening set. After taking a 13-8 lead, a quick 5-0 run gave them the momentum they needed to win the first set 25-11. Senior Majesta Valasek had five kills and junior Alexis Pontine had five assists in the opening period.
Hastings trailed much of the second set, including 22-20, before taking the lead and the set 27-25. Valasek had six kills, while sophomore Ilse Benne and freshman Mikah O'Neill each had four kills in the set. Senior Miriam Miller had seven digs in the tight second set, to go along with 10 assists from Pontine and seven assists from junior Kinzi Havranek.
The Broncos jumped out to a 17-8 lead in the third set, but the Stars rallied, rattling off six straight points to cut the lead to 17-14. Hastings stretched their lead back out to 23-18, but the Stars battled back to get within one, 23-22. The Broncos won the next two points, including the last one from Benne to win the match.
Valasek led the way for the Broncos in kills with 14, along with nine from Benne. Miller had a game-high 25 digs and Pontine had 25 assists.
Hastings will play Lewis-Clark State College in their second and final Bulldog Bash match at 12:30pm tomorrow, August 17th. The match will also be played at Friedrich Arena in Seward, NE.
