Tanner Scores Golden Goal in OT to Send Broncos to GPAC Final

Tanner Scores Golden Goal in OT to Send Broncos to GPAC Final

(Seward, NE) – In a rematch of two of the best teams in the GPAC taking place on Saturday night for the chance to host the tournament final, Hastings scored first, but was quickly answered by Concordia. The game went to overtime and sophomore Payton Tanner scored the golden goal coming off a great pass from fellow sophomore Madison Rhodes.

In the first half, Concordia took the first two shots, the first of which was on goal and saved by Hastings freshman goalkeeper Autumn Button in the ninth minute. Senior Megan Lampe took the first two shots for Hastings, one sailing high and the other wide. Senior Jesse Chartier had her shot in the 36th minute saved by Concordia, the lone shot put on goal by Hastings in the first half.

The Bulldogs attempted eight shots in the first half to Hastings' three and led 3-1 in shots on goal, but Button kept it scoreless at halftime with three saves.

Hastings came out aggressive in the second half, as Chartier and Tanner both fired shots that were turned away. In the 53rd minute however, sophomore Sabrina DeHart sent a kick up and over the Bulldog backline, allowing Rhodes to run it down and score it to put Hastings up 1-0. Concordia answered back with a corner kick goal in the 66th minute to tie it at 1.

The Broncos had a chance to retake the lead in the 74th minute on a header by junior Payton Henshaw, but Concordia kept it out of the net and Hastings withstood the Bulldog shot attempts to send the game to overtime.

In overtime both teams got a shot on goal and then it was Rhodes with a touch pass to a Tanner who was cutting in from the outside. Tanner split a pair of Concordia defenders for a one-on-one chance with the goalie, and kicked it past her on the left side of the net.

Concordia outshot the Broncos 16-9 overall and 7-6 in shots on goal. Henshaw, Chartier, Tanner, and Lampe each had two shots on goal, with Henshaw and Chartier having both on goal. Button got the win, allowing just one goal and saving six shots.

Up next, Hastings will host #4-seed Dordt, who defeated #8-seed Mount Marty 3-0 tonight, for the GPAC Tournament Championship on Wednesday, Nov. 12 at 7pm.
