Women's Soccer Falls in Clash of Top GPAC Teams
(Hastings, NE) – In a battle between two of the top GPAC teams, both of which received votes in the latest NAIA poll, Hastings fell 2-1 against Concordia on Wednesday.
The game marked the first Hastings regular season conference loss since Sept. 27, 2023 in a 1-0 loss at Briar Cliff, as well as the first home regular season conference loss since Sept. 22, 2022 in a 1-0 loss to Jamestown.
The scoring was started in the ninth minute by Hastings' freshman Avery Higgins from junior Madie Miles. Concordia later tied up the match in the 20th minute, as the 1-1 score held to halftime.
Concordia outshot the Broncos 10-5 in the first half and 4-3 on shots on goal. Senior Jesse Chartier recorded the other four shot attempts, two of which were on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Tatiana Villasenor had three saves in the first half.
Hastings had opportunities in the second half, but it was Concordia that broke through with a goal in the 76th minute. The Broncos had kicks and corner kicks in the final 14 minutes to try to tie the game, including a header by senior Millie Gell that sailed high. The Bulldogs pulled out the victory over the Broncos, 2-1.
The Broncos outshot the Bulldogs 5-4 in the second half, but were not able to get a shot on goal, while Concordia capitalized on their lone shot on goal. For the game, Chartier led the team in shots with six and Gell had two attempts.
Up next, Hastings will host Dordt on Saturday, October 11 at 8:30pm.
