Women's Soccer Outlasts Doane on Rhodes' Goal
(Crete, NE) – Going on the road in a conference rival matchup against Doane, the Hastings women's soccer team had to wait most of the match to score, but came away with a 1-0 on Wednesday night on a goal from sophomore Madison Rhodes in the 84th minute.
The teams battled through a scoreless first half, with Hastings recording seven shots to Doane's three. The Broncos also held a 3-1 advantage on shots on goal, but the Tigers managed to go into halftime with the match tied at zero.
Rhodes and fellow sophomore Sophia Lee each took two shots with one on goal in the first half. Junior Payton Henshaw got the only other Bronco shot on goal in the opening period.
Early in the second half, the Broncos got some good looks but were unable to capitalize. Freshman Avery Higgins had a shot go off the crossbar in the 48th minute, and senior Jesse Chartier missed on a pair of opportunities shortly after.
After a couple of shots by Lee, and later shots by Rhodes and senior Millie Gell, were saved by the Tigers, Lee found Rhodes for a goal in the 84th minute to put Hastings ahead, 1-0, which would hold to be the final score.
Both teams had many more scoring chances in the final 45 minutes, as Hastings took 11 shots and had six of them on goal, while Doane attempted six shots with two on goal. Rhodes led the team with six shot attempts, getting four on goal, while Lee put three of her four attempts on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Tatiana Villasenor saved all three opportunities for the Broncos.
Up next, Hastings will take on Dakota Wesleyan at home on Saturday, Sept. 27 at 8pm as part of Homecoming weekend.
