Coyotes Take Down Broncos, 2-1

(Hastings, NE) – Playing their first regular season contest of the 2025 season, the Hastings Broncos dropped their home opener to Kansas Wesleyan, 2-1, on Saturday night.

Kansas Wesleyan scored 75 seconds into the game to take an early lead. Hastings answered back on a pass from junior Aubrey Yantis to sophomore Madison Rhodes in the 12th minute to tie it up at one.

The game would enter halftime still tied at one, with Kansas Wesleyan taking more shots (7-5), while Hastings' freshman goalkeeper Autumn Button recorded five of her eight saves in the first half. Rhodes led the team in the first half with two shots attempted.

Freshman Avery Higgins had a couple of scoring opportunities in the first few minutes of the second half, but it was the Coyotes that broke the tie in the 63rd minute with a goal to go up 2-1. Hastings had a couple of scoring chances afterwards, but both sailed wide, as Kansas Wesleyan hung on to the 2-1 win.

Higgins took four shots to lead Hastings, while Rhodes took just the two first half attempts, including the one Bronco goal. Junior Jasmin Bislev Nielsen took the only other shot on goal for Hastings, one of her two shot attempts on the night. The Coyotes outshot the Broncos (13-10) and had a 10-2 advantage on shots on goal.

Up next, Hastings will travel to Parkville, MO to take on Park University at 5:30pm on Wednesday, Aug. 27
