Women's Basketball Puts Away Morningside in the Second Half, Win by 20
(Sioux City, IA) – In their final road game of the regular season, Hastings started slow, but outscored the Mustangs in the final three quarters to get the 79-59 win on Saturday afternoon. The Broncos turned up their defensive pressure to force 34 turnovers in the win.
Hastings took a 10-5 lead less than three minutes into the game, with a couple of layups from junior Bailey Kissinger and three points each from sophomore McKenna Yates and senior Macy Bryant. Morningside scored the next 11 points to take a 16-10 lead halfway through the quarter. The Broncos would be held to three points the rest of the quarter, as the Mustangs led 18-13 after one.
In the second quarter, the Broncos started on a 10-0 run in under two minutes, as Kissinger had five points in that stretch to go up 23-18. Morningside answered back and took a brief lead at 27-25 at the 6:10 mark, then sophomores Ann Bose and Adyson Mlnarik drilled threes. Yates and senior Mariyah Avila scored inside the arc and Bose scored the final three points of the half to put Hastings up 40-35 going to the break.
Bose got inside for two to start the third quarter scoring, but Morningside kept it close, getting to within two with 7:17 to go. With Hastings leading 46-44 halfway through the third, sophomore Josilyn Miller hit two threes to go up eight. The Mustangs cut the lead to five with a minute left, but Kissinger pushed the lead to seven at 54-47 with a jumper heading to the fourth.
After a three-pointer by Morningside on the first play of the fourth, Miller went on a personal 5-0 run. Leading by six, Yates made two free throws and after a missed layup by Morningside, Bose got to the rim for two more to go up 10 with 5:08 left. Bose's jumper later put them up 12, as Hastings continued to grow their lead, eventually winning 79-59.
Both teams were held below 40 percent from the field and 30 percent from three, but Hastings turned Morningside over 34 times and scored 28 points off of them. The Broncos also held a 21-9 advantage in bench points. In the fourth quarter, Hastings forced Morningside to shoot 31 percent with nine turnovers, all steals by the Broncos.
Miller came off the bench and tied a team-high with 18 points, making 3-6 from three, along with three steals. Yates also had 18 points to go with nine rebounds, six assists, and four steals. Bose finished with 14 points, four rebounds, and four steals. Bryant contributed 13 points, three rebounds and two steals. Kissinger was one point shy of a double-double, ending with nine points and 13 rebounds, adding in four steals as well.
