Women's Basketball Defeats Waldorf by 51; All 5 Starters Reach Double-Figures
(Hastings, NE) – The women's basketball team played Waldorf at home on Saturday afternoon, dominating 100-49 with all five starters reaching double-figures in scoring.
Junior Bailey Kissinger scored the first two baskets of the game at the rim and sophomore Ann Bose made two at the line to go up 6-0 with 7-14 left in the first. Waldorf came back and took the lead at 10-9 with 3:38 to go. A steal and coast-to-coast layup by sophomore Jentri Marx put Hastings back up one, then a second-chance basket by sophomore Josilyn Miller, followed by a pair of steals and layups by sophomore McKenna Yates and Kissinger to end the half with an 8-0 run to lead 17-10.
On the first possession of the second quarter, senior Macy Bryant splashed in a three. After a stop, Kissinger converted a tough and-one inside, then Bryant finished in close and senior Mariyah Avila put in a corner three to cap the 19-0 extended run with 7:49 to go, leading 28-10. Leading 36-18 with 3:13 left, Bose scored on a backdoor cut, assisted by Avila. With a 40-21 advantage, Hastings scored the final four points of the half to go up 44-21.
Avila drilled a deep ball to begin the third quarter and Hastings continued to grow the lead with layups from Kissinger, Yates, and Bryant to take a 53-25 lead less than three minutes in. Back-to-back threes from Bose and Avila put them up 32 halfway through the third. Yates hit two threes and scored eight points the rest of the quarter and the Broncos took a 79-38 lead going to the fourth quarter.
Bose and Bryant scored early in the fourth and two Kissinger free throws put them up 46 at the 8:18 mark. Later in the quarter Bryant scored down low and Bose's steal and layup put them up 90-43. Freshmen Dalia Durant and Amirah Pena drilled threes and freshman Ashley Bauer finished through contact to add to the lead, making it a 100-49 final.
For the game, Hastings shot 41 percent from the field and 35 percent from three. Waldorf was held to 28 percent from the field and 25 percent from three. Hastings outrebounded the Warriors 66-33 and scored 28 points off of 21 turnovers.
All five starters reached double-figures with Kissinger leading the way with 15 points, nine rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Yates had 14 points, five assists, and four rebounds. Bose finished with 13 points and five steals, while Bryant had 12 points and seven rebounds. Avila contributed 11 points and two steals.
Up next, Hastings will have a week off until they play at Morningside on Saturday, Feb. 14 at 2pm.
