Broncos Get Second Straight Shutout Win

(Hastings, NE) – The women's tennis team had their success from yesterday's match carry over to today, as they beat Avila 7-0, marking the first time since April 2018 that they have shut out two consecutive opponents. It also marked the first time since April of 2018 that both the men's and women's teams shutout the same team during the year.

Freshman Cara Ansbach and sophomore Victoria Harris opened up their play on Friday with a 6-3 win at #1 doubles. Junior Paige Willcoxon and and sophomore Josline Carter also made easy work at #2 doubles, winning 6-1. Avila did not have enough available players for the #3 doubles match, as Hastings took all three matches to take the doubles point.

Carter battled back at #1 singles after losing the first set 6-3, to winning the second set, 6-3. She trailed 4-1 in the 10-point super tiebreak of the final set, but won nine of the last 10 points to take the tiebreak, 10-5. Harris also won in a third set super tiebreak. After taking the first set, 6-0, Avila won the second, 6-3. Harris pulled away in the third by winning 10-4.

Willcoxon won her first set at #3 singles without dropping a game and later won the second set, 6-3. Ansbach and freshman Lexi Benson made quick work at both #4 singles and #5 singles by both winning 6-0, 6-0 to finish off the 7-0 win.

Up next, Hastings will host Baker University on Sunday, Mar. 2 at 9am.
