Harris Wins Singles Section as Women's Tennis Opens Season

(Colorado Springs, CO) – The Bronco women's tennis team wasted no time getting in matches, traveling to Colorado for fall matches after just a week of practice. Sophomore Victoria Harris had a terrific opening weekend, winning the 'C' singles section.

Harris started her title run in singles with a 6-3, 6-2 win in the round of 16 and followed that up with a 3-6, 6-0, 1-0(5) comeback win in the quarterfinals. She won her semifinal match 6-3, 6-4 to set up the championship match. Harris lost the first set 3-6, but forced a third set super tiebreak by winning the second set 7-5. She closed the deal in the third set tiebreak, winning 10-5.

Also in the 'C' singles section, junior Paige Willcoxon pulled out an opening round win in a three-set battle by winning the third set super tiebreak, 11-9, after splitting the first two sets. The win advanced her to the quarterfinals where she lost in straight sets.

Josline Carter was the lone Bronco to compete in the 'B' singles bracket, losing both matches in straight sets. Freshmen Lexi Benson and Cara Ansbach also lost their first 'C' singles section matches. While Benson was unable to win her consolation match, Ansbach won her third set super tiebreaker, 10-4, after splitting the first two sets. Ansbach would later fall in the consolation semifinals in straight sets.

In the 'B' doubles section, Carter and Harris received a bye in the quarterfinals, then lost 3-6 in the semifinals. In the four-team 'c' doubles draw, Willcoxon and Ansbach won their semifinal match, 6-2, before falling in the championship match, 2-6. On the other side of the semifinal bracket, Benson teamed up with a player from Colorado State University Pueblo, but lost both of their matches.

The Broncos next match will be at Nebraska Wesleyan in Lincoln, NE on Thursday, September 12.
